Blackjack players have had success
in beating the house by using card-counting systems. These are based
on the principle that the make-up of a deck of cards is changing
as the cards are played. A deck is in the player's favor when it
has more ten-count cards in it, because the player has a greater
chance of getting blackjack, which pays 3:2 (more money than with
other winning hands).
By assigning a value (such as +1 for high cards and -1 for low cards),
a player can roughly determine the ratio of high cards to low cards
remaining in the deck at anytime. When the deck contains more high
cards and the odds are in his favour, he increases the amount he
bets. When the deck contains more low cards, he bets the minimum.
The count also guides his decisions on whether to hit, stand, double,
or split.
Note: Most online casinos
shuffle the cards after each round. This prevents players from using
their computer to keep a count to get an edge. When gambling with
online casinos, you are better off sticking with the basic blackjack
strategy.
