Online Qualifier
Greg Raymer
becomes
World Series of Poker Champion!
Congratulations go to Greg ‘Fossilman’ Raymer, the new
World Series of Poker Champion, seen here on his way to the title
and $5 million, wearing his trademark ‘spooky’ hologram
spectacles.
The 2004 World Series of Poker began with
2,576 entrants and ended on a final spellbinding day with online poker
player Raymer maintaining his dominant chip lead throughout, coolly
dispatching his opponents one by one.
In the final showdown, Greg out-gunned
fellow online qualifier, David ‘RugDoctor’ Williams, to
take home the $5 million prize.
The World Series of Poker has been held
annually ever since 1970 at the Horseshoe, Downtown, Las Vegas, though
next year, for the first time, it is going to Harrah's Rio Suites,
Las Vegas, with the final 2 days of the main event concluded at The
Horseshoe.
The youngest poker player ever to win the
WSOP main event was Phil Hellmuth, in 1989 at the age of 25. Also
known as the Poker Brat, (though only for his table persona) Phil
has won 6 WSOP bracelets and holds the record for his total of 45
cashes. Total Money Won: $3,601,410.00
The new World Champion, Greg Raymer, who
beat a record field, got his princely $5,000,000 cheque in return
for a buy-in stake of $10,000, and he won that on an online poker
site, for an original stake of just $40!

Harry
Demetriou was crowned Champion in the inaugural Victor Poker
Cup and took home £250,000, after he held off a strong
challenge from Hendon mobster and bookies favourite, Ram Vaswani.
The key
hand came shortly after 4am when Harry raised under the gun
with a pair of pocket nines. Ram found Ace-King and moved all-in.
Harry called, and when no help came on the flop for either player
Harry took the title, the trophy and the cheque for a cool quarter
of a million.
