Five cards are dealt face-up. After
that there are just three decisions for the player to make. Firstly:
how much to wager. Secondly: after the dealer has revealed one of
his cards, whether to Raise ( 'call' ), or Fold. The third decision
is whether to take the Side ( or progressive ) bet.
If, after the dealer has revealed one of his cards, you decide to
continue by raising, the dealer then reveals the rest of his cards.
What happens next depends on the dealer's hand. If he is holding Ace-King,
or better, the hand is said to have 'qualified' and the game continues.
If the dealer fails to 'qualify', you win the ante bet ( which pays
evens ), but your 'call' bet is simply returned, regardless of what
cards you are holding.
If the dealer's hand does 'qualify', then the hands go head-to-head.
If you win, the ante pays even money, and if you win with anything
better than a pair, the house pays out on your 'call' bet, according
to the bonus odds for each hand - from a Royal Flush that pays 100:1,
down to Two-Pair paying 2:1. |

| THE SIDE (PROGRESSIVE) BET |
As stated, there are two rounds of
betting. The first bet is the ante. The second opportunity comes when
the dealer reveals one of his cards. If you are encouraged by what
you see, you can place a 'call' bet, which is fixed at twice the ante
bet. If you don't 'call', you Fold and lose the ante. The third opportunity
to bet is the to go for the Side bet.
In many of the Caribbean Poker games there is a meter running that
shows the amount in the Progressive Pot. For a Side bet of say $1
you get the chance to win some, or all of that Pot - if you win with
a Flush or better. The house edge on this bet is about 22%, so the
smart money says: don't bet until the pot is high ($150,000 or more). |
| STRATEGIES |
If you hold any pair or better =
Raise.
If you hold less than Ace/King = Fold.
If you hold Ace/King:
(i) and the dealer's card is 2 through to queen and matches one of
yours = Raise.
(ii) and the dealer's card is an Ace or a King and you hold a Jack
or Queen = Raise
(iii) and the dealer's card matches none of yours and is lower that
your fourth highest card and you have a Queen = Raise |
| SIMPLE TIPS |
A simple bit of advice - don't raise
on anything less than Ace, King, Jack, 8, or 3.
Don't forget, if the dealer's hand fails to qualify - you only win
the ante.
Check out the table's maximum payout - no matter what your bet is,
or the value of your winning hand, the payout will not exceed this
limit.
Don't make the Side Bet unless the Pot is high. |
