American roulette wheels are usually
divided into 38 slots, numbered 1 to 36, plus 0 and 00. Even numbers
are red, odd numbers black. 0 and 00 are green. Some casinos use the
European wheel, which has only 37 slots, there being no 00. |

Some casinos use a rule called en prison. When the ball lands on zero,
or double zero, the player loses half the bet, or can let the bet
remain in play, with the results to be determined on the next spin.
This rule only applies to even money bets. |
| ODDS |
With the 38-number American
wheel, the house has a 5.26 percent edge. (Whenever 0 or 00 come up,
all bets lose.)
With the 37-number European wheel, the house advantage is 2.7%, meaning
that on every $100 waged the house expects to make $2.70. With the
en prison rule, this edge drops to 1.35%.

| THE MARTINGALE SYSTEM |
The Martingale system (and variations
of it) is a basic and widely used and talked about betting system.
Under this system, you increase your stake when you lose and start
all over again after you win. If you play for long enough and can
keep coming up with the increased stake each time you lose, you will
be ensured a profit when you do win.
A example bet might be to gamble on black (or red) coming up on the
roulette wheel. This is a simple even money bet. If you double your
stake every spin until your colour comes up, you are bound to win.
There are, however, several limitations on this system. Doubling your
stake every time you lose will very quickly require you to make a
very much larger bet than the original stake. An initial bet of $10
will have become a total bet of $630, if you wish to continue after
five consecutive losses - and with odds of just 1:1, even when you
do win you will only have profited by $10 (the amount of your original
stake!) To prevent you from making this sure-fired bet (assuming you
have unlimited funds to see it through to the end), the casino tables
will have minimum and maximum limits on such bets.
Using this system when the odds are higher (e.g. two adjacent numbers
paying 17:1) is an alternative way of using this system, only increasing
your bet after a number of spins of the wheel (when the win profit
has dipped close to the total wagered). This way the total wagered
does not rise so dramatically and exponentially - but, of course,
as the odds paid for the winning bet get higher, the probability of
the winning numbers coming-up gets lower. The Martingale will always
rely on the player having inexhaustible funds to ride out losing streaks
and on the house permitting such a bet. |
